As the mehendi designer starts the painting, the soon-to-be bride’s heart starts pumping in a different tone. She is looking at everyone around her, enjoying her family reunion. Everyone is so happy, everyone is blessing her. However, her heart is pumping high, and it is squeezing her from the inside. Thinking of leaving her parents makes her burst into tears. She is losing her strength. Finally, her love called her.

Her hands are beautifully designed. She is thinking about how her bestowed supports her, and tell her it’s a ritual only. No one can ever separate her from her parents. It just we all feel in same way but it requires a person to point out the same. Mehendi celebration is not only about putting mehendi, dancing and laughing, it’s a day full of emotion, love, and caring.

Mehndi is a form of body art and temporary skin decoration usually drawn on hands or legs. The henna used for the decorative design comes in a paste form of dry henna leaves. Wearing Mehendi is a sign of piousness, brings good luck and keeps you away from evil spectra. Before any holy rituals begin, mehendi must go. The wedding is a very special and holy event as well. The bride applied mehendi all over her hand up-to-elbow and legs, followed by her bridesmaids and other relatives. Apart from wedding, mehendi can be used during any festivals.

In India, different religions have different rituals for wedding. But the mehendi celebration is common in all. During the ceremony the elder people of the bride give blessings and love to her. A happy day full of enjoyment, laugh and some happy tears. Tradition for the mehendi celebration is different in different parts of India. Though the basic concept for mehendi is same.

Rituals of Mehendi

Before the application of the henna, the guests would throw coins over the bride’s head as a symbol of fertility. Then, the bride’s soon to be mother-in-law would then bring out a piece of silk cloth as a gift to the bride. The bride would then walk along the unrolled piece of silk cloth in the direction of her future mother-in-law and kiss her hand.
Once this is done, fruits, nuts, and pastries would be brought out and songs would be sung in hopes of making the bride cry. It’s believed that the bride’s crying would bring good luck. The bride would then sit on a cushion while her mother-in-law placed a gold coin in her hand as another sign of good luck. After this, henna is applied. A widely used custom in all over India.

The bride celebrates the entire day with her sisters, friends and family. It is a huge family function, full of joy and happy tears. She spends her time with her family like a daughter, sister & friends. The very next day she will start her new journey as a wife, a daughter-in-law, & a sister-in-law.
