As the mehendi designer starts the painting, the soon-to-be bride’s heart starts pumping in a different tone. She is looking at everyone around her, enjoying her family reunion. The bride applied mehendi all over her hand up-to-elbow and legs, followed by her bridesmaids and other relatives. Apart from wedding, mehendi can be used during any festivals.
In India, different religions have different rituals for wedding. But the mehendi celebration is common in all. During the ceremony the elder people of the bride give blessings and love to her. Rituals of Mehendi
Before the application of the henna, the guests would throw coins over the bride’s head as a symbol of fertility. Then, the bride’s soon to be mother-in-law would then bring out a piece of silk cloth as a gift to the bride. The bride would then walk along the unrolled piece of silk cloth in the direction of her future mother-in-law and kiss her hand.
Once this is done, fruits, nuts, and pastries would be brought out and songs would be sung in hopes of making the bride cry. It’s believed that the bride’s crying would bring good luck. The bride would then sit on a cushion while her mother-in-law placed a gold coin in her hand as another sign of good luck. After this, henna is applied. A widely used custom in all over India.
The bride celebrates the entire day with her sisters, friends and family. It is a huge family function, full of joy and happy tears. She spends her time with her family like a daughter, sister & friends. The very next day she will start her new journey as a wife, a daughter-in-law, & a sister-in-law.
